You absolutely do not need any prior drawing or artistic experience to take this course. Many students start out drawing simple stick figures—and with time, practice, and guidance, they’re able to create expressive, recognizable essence drawings of loved ones in Spirit.
This course will guide you through the foundations of drawing facial features, helping you build the skills you need step by step. While artistic talent isn’t required, you’ll be encouraged to spend a bit of extra time practicing outside of class. With patience and dedication, drawing facial structures can become second nature!

Yes! We’ll include exercises in as many classes as possible to help you apply what you’re learning in real time. The amount of practice during each session may vary depending on the material covered and the number of questions that come up. So, while we aim to include exercises regularly, there may be some classes where time doesn’t allow for a full practice.

what materials do i need for this program
Great news—you don’t need a lot to get started! The suggested supplies are minimal and easy to gather. Here’s what we recommend:

- Sketchbook or drawing pad (8.5 x 11 or larger is ideal)
- Pencils – A basic set including HB, 2B, and 4B will do nicely
- Eraser – A kneaded eraser or soft white eraser is helpful
- Blending tools (optional but really helpful for shading) – such as blending stumps or cotton swabs
- Ruler – for proportion exercises (optional, but helpful)
- Access to Zoom on a device with a stable internet connection and working audio/video
- Throughout the course, Joe will also introduce you to other optional tools you may want to explore, depending on your interests and how you'd like to develop your style.
