Throughout this Spiritual Trench Box Series, we have explored five supports that can help hold us steady as we deepen our mediumship: practice, commitment, community, integrity, and education. In the last post, we considered how education keeps us curious, discerning, and open to growth. Now, as we bring the series to a close, I would like to return to the question beneath all five pillars: Why does the structure surrounding our development matter? What Are We Making Room For? When we begin developing mediumship, much of our attention naturally goes toward what we hope to receive. Will I perceive something? Will the information make sense? Will the sitter understand it? Will I know the difference between my own thoughts and communication from Spirit? These are understandable questions. Yet over time, I have come to believe that mediumship is not only about the information we receive. It is also about who we are becoming as the person through whom that information moves. We are not simply gathering impressions. We are learning to become steadier, clearer, and more compassionate instruments of peace. That kind of development requires more than an open awareness. It requires a structure capable of supporting what openness may reveal. Going Deeper Disturbs the Ground Before I became a full-time medium and teacher, I worked as a home builder and developer. On a construction site, digging deeply into the earth can make the surrounding ground unstable. Soil that appeared solid at the surface may begin to shift or collapse. That is why workers use a trench box. The trench box does not do the digging for them, nor does it prevent the earth from moving. It creates a protected working space so they can continue beneath the surface without being buried by what falls back in. I see a similar need within spiritual development. As we deepen our awareness, we may disturb old fears, memories, beliefs, and patterns. Self-doubt may return. A difficult reading may awaken an old need to prove ourselves. Someone else’s criticism may touch a place within us that has never felt fully secure. This does not necessarily mean that something has gone wrong. Sometimes it means we have reached a deeper layer of the work. The purpose of our Spiritual Trench Box is not to keep those experiences away. It is to help us meet them without allowing them to overwhelm the space in which we are trying to grow. The Five Pillars Working Together Each pillar of the Spiritual Trench Box offers a different kind of support. Practice keeps the connection familiar. By returning again and again, we begin recognizing how Spirit communicates through us and how our own awareness responds. Commitment helps us remain present when the work feels quiet, uncertain, or less exciting than it once did. It is the steady willingness to continue without forcing an outcome. Community reminds us that deeply personal development does not have to mean isolation. Trusted peers can offer understanding, honest perspective, and support when the work becomes difficult. Integrity gives us solid ground beneath our feet. When we share what we receive honestly, acknowledge what we do not understand, and resist the temptation to embellish or manipulate, we can examine our work without abandoning ourselves. Education keeps us curious and discerning. It expands the inner library through which we recognize meaning while reminding us that there may always be more to understand. None of these pillars stands entirely alone. Practice without commitment may disappear when progress feels slow. Commitment without community may become lonely. Community without integrity may reinforce us without challenging us. Integrity without education may be sincere but limited in perspective. Education without practice may remain only an idea. Together, the five pillars create a living structure - one that can become stronger and more responsive as our mediumship continues to unfold. Support Does Not Mean Avoidance It is important to remember that a trench box does not keep us out of the trench. It allows us to enter it more safely. In the same way, our spiritual supports are not meant to protect us from every uncomfortable feeling, difficult question, or challenging experience. They do not guarantee that we will never doubt ourselves, misunderstand an impression, or encounter criticism. Their purpose is not avoidance. It is steadiness and growth along your mediumship path. With the right support, we can examine an old pattern without immediately becoming trapped inside it. We can receive a “no” during a reading without allowing it to erase our trust in the connection. We can listen to thoughtful criticism without collapsing beneath it, and we can recognize unfair judgment without allowing it to define us. The structure gives us room to remain curious. That room matters because growth rarely asks us to become fearless. More often, it asks us to stay present while fear, uncertainty, and possibility exist together. We Are Not Chasing Spirit I often remind students that we are not meant to chase Spirit around. When we chase, we may begin reaching for information, straining to make something happen, or moving so quickly that we lose awareness of what is actually being offered. Our desire for connection can quietly become a demand for proof. Perhaps our work is less about pursuing Spirit and more about creating the inner conditions in which a relationship can unfold. We practice so the connection becomes familiar. We cultivate awareness so we can recognize subtle changes in our mind, emotions, and body. We remain grounded enough to notice when we are receiving, when we are interpreting, and when our own needs may be entering the communication. Our Spiritual Trench Box helps create a clear and supported space where Spirit can come to us, blend with us, and work through us in service to the person sitting before us. The structure does not create the connection. It helps us remain present enough to participate in it. From Impression to Relationship There is a difference between observing a psychic or spiritual impression and entering into a sustained mediumistic relationship. An impression may arrive quickly. Blending asks us to remain. It asks us to trust without becoming careless, interpret without forcing, and step aside without disappearing from our responsibility. Blending with Spirit asks us to stay aware of ourselves while also opening to something beyond ourselves. The clearer our working space becomes, the more freely love, meaning, and truth may be expressed through the communication with Spirit. That does not mean every reading will be perfect. It means we are building the capacity to stay with the work more honestly, even when it is imperfect. A Structure for the Continuing Journey The Spiritual Trench Box is not something we build once and then forget. There may be seasons when one pillar needs more attention than the others. We may need to:
That return is not evidence that the structure has failed; It is how the structure remains alive. Whether we are moving through a 48-week program, many years of mediumship, or a lifetime of spiritual discovery, we will continue encountering new layers of ourselves and the work. The support we need may change, but the need for support does not make us weak. It makes deeper exploration possible. Perhaps the real purpose of the Spiritual Trench Box is not simply to protect what we have already developed. Perhaps it is to create enough steadiness for something deeper and more authentic to emerge. A Question to Consider As you continue your spiritual development, which pillar is asking for your attention now? Joe’s Closing Thought I do not believe we build a Spiritual Trench Box so that nothing can ever disturb us. We build it so that when the ground shifts - as it inevitably will - we have something honest and dependable to return to. With the right support around us, we can continue going deeper without losing sight of who we are or why we entered the work. Thank you.
