The Questions We Carry: Rethinking How We Learn Mediumship

There comes a moment in the journey of almost every developing medium when the excitement of discovery gives way to questions.  Sometimes those questions arise quietly.
Am I progressing?
Why does connection seem effortless one day and difficult the next?
Why do others appear to move forward while I seem to remain in the same place?
What level am I?
Why do I feel stuck?
Over many years of teaching mediumship, I have come to realize that these questions are nearly universal. They are voiced by brand new students taking their very first class and by experienced practitioners who have been serving spirit for decades.

Yet what if some of these questions are leading us in the wrong direction?

The Quiet Truth About Growth

In our modern world, we have become accustomed to measuring progress. We move through school grades, earn certificates, and advance from one level to another. It is only natural that we would bring this same mindset into mediumship.

But spiritual growth rarely unfolds in such a linear way. Mediumship does not develop like a school curriculum where one lesson is mastered and permanently left behind. Instead, development tends to unfold in cycles. We revisit familiar principles again and again, each time encountering them from a deeper place of understanding.

The fundamentals we once believed we had mastered often reveal entirely new dimensions as our awareness expands. Growth in mediumship is seldom dramatic. More often, it is quiet.  It may appear as increased trust in our own perception. A greater ability to remain present with another person's grief. A deeper understanding of ourselves. A growing capacity to surrender. A more refined sensitivity to spirit.

These forms of growth cannot easily be measured, yet they are often the most significant.

What if Mediumship Isn't About Levels?

One of the most common questions I hear from students is:  "What level am I?"

It is an understandable question. We naturally want to know where we stand.
Yet after many years as both a student and teacher, I have become increasingly convinced that mediumship development is less about levels and more about depth.

Two students may demonstrate very similar abilities while standing in entirely different places in their personal unfoldment. One may possess excellent mechanics but struggle with trust. Another may work beautifully with spirit yet continue to wrestle with confidence. A third may have years of experience but still be deepening their understanding of evidence, ethics, or self-awareness.
Development is rarely one-dimensional.

Rather than asking, "What level am I?" perhaps a more helpful question is:
"What am I being invited to understand more deeply?"  This simple shift changes everything.

What If We've Been Asking the Wrong Question?

Many students spend years asking:  "How do I become more advanced?"
But perhaps mediumship invites a different inquiry. Not:  "How advanced am I?"
But: "How can I become a clearer, more compassionate, and more conscious instrument for spirit?"

The true work of mediumship is not simply acquiring techniques. It is becoming.
Becoming more present.
More authentic.
More self-aware.
More trusting.
More willing to surrender our expectations and allow spirit to work through us.
In this sense, mediumship is not merely something we do. It is something we continually grow into.

Why So Many Students Feel Stuck

Feeling stuck is not a sign that you are failing.  In truth, periods of stagnation are often a natural and necessary part of spiritual development.
Sometimes we feel stuck because we are comparing ourselves to others.
Sometimes we become overly focused on mechanics and forget the deeper purpose of the work.  Sometimes we seek certainty where mediumship requires trust.  And sometimes what appears to be a plateau is actually a period of integration—a season in which important inner changes are quietly taking place beneath the surface.

Just as seeds develop unseen beneath the soil before they emerge, much of our mediumistic growth occurs invisibly.
The challenge is learning to trust the process.

A Different Way of Learning

These reflections have profoundly influenced the way I now approach teaching.
Rather than viewing mediumship as a series of levels to conquer, I have come to see development as an ongoing journey of unfoldment—one that honors the unique pace, experiences, strengths, and challenges of each individual.
No two journeys will ever look exactly alike.  Nor should they.

The path of mediumship is deeply personal, yet it need not be walked alone.
Wherever you find yourself today—curious, uncertain, experienced, inspired, or feeling temporarily stuck—know that your journey is unfolding exactly as it must.

Perhaps the most important question is not how far you have traveled, but how willing you are to remain open to what spirit is still trying to teach you.
