This post begins a series exploring what I call the Spiritual Trench Box - a structure made up of five pillars that can help support us as we deepen our mediumship and spiritual development. Before looking at each pillar, I want to begin with where this idea came from and why I believe the support surrounding our growth can be just as important as the depth of the work itself. What Holds Us Steady as We Dig Deeper? Before I became a full-time medium and teacher, I was a home builder and developer, responsible for miles of roads and hundreds of homes. On construction sites, one of the most important pieces of safety equipment was something called a trench box. When workers dig a deep trench in preparation for a foundation, the surrounding earth can become unstable. The walls may collapse inward, burying anyone working below the surface. A trench box - once made from wood and now generally constructed from heavy steel - is lowered into the ground to hold those walls in place. If the surrounding earth or water collapses, the workers inside remain protected. They may get muddy, but they are not buried. Over time, I began to see this as a meaningful metaphor for our spiritual lives. Clearing the Past Is Only Part of the Work When we explore mediumship or undertake any kind of deep inner work, we often start disturbing familiar ground. We may:
We begin removing some of the “old dirt” so that a stronger and more authentic foundation can take shape. But removing the dirt is only part of the process. Without support:
Past experiences can begin shaping the present again, sometimes before we even recognize what is happening. This does not necessarily mean we have failed or gone backward. It may simply mean that going deeper has revealed where we need greater support. The Five Pillars of a Spiritual Trench Box I think of our Spiritual Trench Box as being built from five essential supports:
Each pillar offers something different. Together, they create a steadier space in which we can explore our abilities, face uncertainty, and grow without expecting ourselves to have everything figured out. A trench box does not keep a worker out of the trench. It makes it safer to enter. In much the same way, these pillars do not prevent discomfort, doubt, or change. They help us remain grounded when those experiences arise. Perhaps strength is not about becoming untouched by the old dirt of our lives. Perhaps it is about building enough support that it no longer buries us. A Question to Consider What supports you when your spiritual growth begins to disturb familiar ground? Joe’s Closing Thought I believe going deeper asks more of us than courage alone. It asks us to create the support that allows honesty, uncertainty, and growth to exist together. We may still get a little muddy along the way, but we do not have to lose ourselves in what we are trying to clear. Peace. — Joe In the next post in this series, we will explore the first pillar of the Spiritual Trench Box: Practice. We will consider what regular practice gives us, what can return when we step away from it, and why practice may be less about proving our ability than keeping our relationship with Spirit familiar and alive.
